Web accessibility is the practice of building sites that people can use regardless of disability — including those navigating by keyboard, using a screen reader, relying on high contrast, or needing motion reduced. The measurable standard is WCAG 2.2, and the level almost everyone means is AA. In the UK, public sector bodies are legally bound to it by the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations 2018; private businesses are bound instead by the Equality Act 2010, which requires reasonable adjustments for disabled people without naming a technical standard. WCAG 2.2 AA is the accepted way of demonstrating you have made them. Point28 builds to it from the first line of markup, because retrofitting accessibility reliably costs more than designing for it. Testing uses a keyboard and a screen reader alongside automated tooling, since automated checks alone catch only around a third of real barriers. What does an accessibility audit involve?
A manual pass with a keyboard and a screen reader, plus automated checks. Automated tools reliably catch perhaps a third of real issues, so anything sold as a purely automated audit is incomplete. The output is a list of failures mapped to specific WCAG success criteria, ordered by severity and by how many users each affects.
How much of accessibility can be tested automatically?
Enough to be useful and nowhere near enough to be sufficient. Contrast ratios, missing alternative text and unlabelled form fields are machine-detectable. Whether alternative text is actually meaningful, whether focus order is logical, and whether an animation triggers discomfort are judgement calls.
Does accessible design mean a plain, ugly website?
No. Accessibility constrains contrast, motion and interaction — not ambition. It rules out illegible grey-on-grey text and animation that cannot be turned off. Most of what people think of as “accessible-looking” is just careful design.
What is an accessibility statement and do I need one?

Is website accessibility a legal requirement in the UK?
For public sector bodies, yes — the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations 2018 require WCAG 2.2 AA and a published accessibility statement. For private businesses the duty comes from the Equality Act 2010, which requires reasonable adjustments for disabled people; that applies to websites even though no specific standard is named.
What does WCAG 2.2 AA actually mean?
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.2, at the middle of three conformance levels. AA is the level regulators and procurement processes ask for. It covers contrast, keyboard operability, focus visibility, form labelling, motion preferences and more.
Can you make my existing site accessible?
Usually, though the cost depends entirely on how it was built. An audit comes first and produces a prioritised list of issues by severity. Some platforms make full conformance impractical, and we will tell you if yours is one of them.
Do accessibility overlays and widgets work?
No. Overlay tools that promise instant compliance do not deliver it, are widely criticised by disabled users, and have been cited in legal claims. Accessibility is a property of the underlying markup.
